Cabling: the invisible foundation of a network
A cable system is installed once and used for years. That is why “we will fix it later” is the most expensive approach here. Replacing a cable that runs inside a wall often means repair work.
| Cable | Typical speed | Distance | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cat5e | Up to 1 Gbit/s | Up to 100 m | Standard office and home networks, saving on budget |
| Cat6 | 1 Gbit/s, 10 Gbit/s over short distances | Up to 100 m (about 55 m for 10 Gbit/s) | New offices, future-proofing, many-device environments |
What we pay attention to in cabling
- The maximum length of an Ethernet cable is 100 metres; farther points need a switch or an optical line.
- Cables must be run separately from electrical wiring, because electromagnetic interference can reduce speed.
- Every cable should be numbered at both ends and punched down properly on the patch panel. This makes finding a problem in the future many times easier.
- The quality of patch cords and connectors matters too: a cheap connector can ruin even the best cable.
