Practical tips for good Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is the topic our customers ask about most. The rules below work for both offices and homes.

  • Place the access point on the ceiling or high on a wall, close to the centre of the space. A device put inside a cabinet, under a desk or in a corner loses half of its signal.
  • The 2.4 GHz band reaches further but is slower and very crowded; 5 GHz is faster but passes through walls poorly. A good device offers both together.
  • If possible, connect access points to the switch by cable. Wireless links (mesh) are great for homes, but in an office or warehouse a wired connection is always more stable.
  • Create a separate Wi-Fi network for guests so that their devices cannot reach company computers and printers.
  • If you use several access points, split the channels so they do not overlap, or use a single management system.
  • Update the firmware of your devices from time to time: it matters for both speed and security.
A common mistake

When Wi-Fi is weak, people buy a “more powerful router”. In reality the problem is often not power but placement: two or three simple access points in the right places give a better result than one powerful device.
